Queens4Africa Appeal : Give the Children of Central School a head start in life

SUPPORT THIS CAUSE

At the end of February 2014 , The Miss Black Africa team is embarking on a charity mission to restore and save two poor primary schools in Eastern Nigeria. We shall be renovating the classrooms, building toilets, supplying classroom furniture including black/whiteboards and giving the children books, clothes and shoes. Help us to help them by donating whatever you can by giving online at http://igg.me/at/queens4Africa/x/5731524

Short Summary

The Miss Black Africa pageant, founded in 2011, is the largest ethnic pageant in the UK and a part of the annual Miss Black Africa Pageant and Charity Awards. The winners become goodwill ambassadors for Miss Black Africa, charged with designing and implementing a charity program based on their Pageant Platform.
The current queen, Sonia Ike, is a 19 year old nursing student and model . She lives in Essex, United Kingdom and is very passionate about the welfare of children. Her mandate is to advocate for improved education and child literacy in impoverished communities worldwide.
The other team members are the 1st and 2nd princesses , Alexalyn Owuadey and Tara Nwachukwu respectively. They are both students living in London.
This campaign is called Queens4Africa and will be executed under the Miss Black Africa platform. In February 2014, the Miss Black Africa team will be travelling to the village of Okohia in Imo State, Nigeria  to renovate and provide an ideal learning environment for two impoverished schools in the area.
We have identified and selected these two primary schools in Imo State, Eastern Nigeria to be the beneficiaries of our fundraising efforts. The Schools are:
1. Central School 7, Okohia
2. Central School , Dimagu.

Head Teacher and some pupils of Central School, Dimagu.

These schools were chosen for the following reasons.
A.  The classrooms were in very poor conditions. The walls were dirty and stained. The classrooms didn't have full height walls so the children got wet whenever it rained.

B.  The Classrooms had damaged and leaking roofs whilst windows were either broken or missing. The roof leaked during the rainy season.

C.   Lack of proper toilet facilities. Pupils either have to use pit latrines which involves the unhygienic practice of stooping over a hole in the ground. The other school had no toilet facilities at all with pupils having to go into the nearby bushes for relief.

                                                         Pit Latrine

D. Most of the chairs and tables were broken whilst some pupils had to use benches as tables.

Children of Central School Okohia using benches as classroom furniture

E.  Textbooks are an inconceivable luxury for most pupils, whilst some are unable to afford stationary such as exercise books and pens.

The Miss Black Africa team paid a courtesy call on the Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK , His Excellency Dr Dalhatu Tafida on the 11th of December 2013 informing him of our proposed mission to Nigeria.

Funds raised from our campaign
Our current goal is £15,000 which will be used for the following:
1. All leaking Roofs will either be repaired or replaced.
2. We shall supply new classroom furniture and repair damaged ones. All students will have proper seats and tables.
3. All classrooms walls will be repainted.
4. We shall also supply new blackboards for every class.
5. The exterior walls of the school will be given a new coat of paint.
6. We shall be supplying hundreds of donated books to make up a small library.
7. We shall upgrade/ replace the current pit latrine to modern ones that use a water reservoir system with ventilation.
If we can raise up to £20,000, instead of the modern pit latrine that uses  reservoir system, we shall build a more sophisticated system one that utilises a well for a continuous flow of water.

The Impact
With your help, we shall be able to give 223 poor children, dry, habitable classrooms, comfortable seats ,desks and proper toilet facilities.
