iROKO Partners enters Nollywood DVD market in South Africa

Nollywood fans in South Africa will be able to watch their favourite stars including 'Mama G'
Nollywood fans in South Africa will be able to watch their favourite stars including 'Mama G'
iROKO Partners, Africa’s largest source of Nigerian entertainment with its platforms iROKOtv and iROKING, announces a major strategic development via its entry into the South African DVD market and the launch of 10,000 new Nigerian movie DVDs.
Nigeria’s movie industry, colloquially known as ‘Nollywood’ is the second largest film industry in the world, producing around 2,000 movies a year.  The launch represents the first foray for iROKOtv, ’Africa’s Netflix’, into the sizeable South African DVD market and is responding to demand for even more Nollywood content in South Africa. It is also a brand new distribution channel for iROKOtv - as historically the company’s content has only been available online.

To launch, ten of iROKOtv’s most popular Nollywood films are now available on top quality DVDs, beautifully packaged and at a cost of R30. They are currently selling in Johannesburg’s local shops and markets including Soweto, Kempton Park, Rosettenville and Randburg.

Jason Njoku, Founder and CEO, said: "iROKOtv revolutionised the video-on-demand (VOD) industry for African entertainment when we launched, bringing thousands of movies online to Nollywood lovers around the world. In a short space of time, we were able to connect with the online African community but, in reality, the majority of Nollywood fans are offline and watch Nollywood on DVDs.

"Access is the immediate challenge for VOD companies here. Until Africa comes online, DVDs will continue to be the primary platform to consume content, which is why iROKOtv has now entered the DVD market."
Almost 50% of iROKOtv’s traffic comes from the UK and US, as Diasporan communities have access to cheap and reliable broadband; something that cannot be said for the vast majority of Africans on the continent. Nollywood is increasingly popular in South Africa but audiences struggle to access high quality, low-cost, legal content online, which makes the shift to DVD sales both exciting for iROKO as a new distribution channel and perfect for South African consumers.

Genevieve Dumourne, Head of iROKO South Africa concluded: "The South African market entry is evidence of iROKO diversifying its offering and broadening its reach across the continent. When we launched www.iROKOtv.com 18 months ago, we gave Nollywood a home online, providing the content loved by so many with a well-deserved beautiful platform. With the launch of the DVD business, we have taken exactly the same approach, producing top quality discs in beautifully designed boxes that really stand out from anything else on the market. It’s an extremely exciting market and we have high expectations for growing this part of the business."

Soul Kate Vol 11: A Precarious Crown

By Kate Henshaw
Kate Henshaw

The world is a stage and everyone is an actor. When the light comes on, that is your opportunity to play a character, become someone else for a time limit and prove your mettle as you convince the audience that you are the character you portray. At the end of your performance, you take a bow and are either booed or applauded for doing a shoddy or great job.

Reality is a whole different ball game. When you come off the stage, the euphoria and accolades stay with you for a while, and it is quite intoxicating. When you get to your dressing room to get out of the costume, you look in the mirror and say to yourself “I did that, I am the one they stood up for” and you are quite proud of your accomplishments. You pick up your belongings and leave for your home; back to your loved ones who know the real you and you do not put up a front for. They know that you do not have two pennies to rub together because you are yet to be paid for the performance you just put up or that your bank account is bulging, but you have so many projects and bills that need your attention, plus the need to relax which is good for your health.

Growing up, I remember telling my dad that I wanted to be a musician (laugh out loud). I was always singing in the shower and felt I had a great voice. He would have none of it and said to me that my choice was a definite no-no. He threatened to stop paying my school fees in the University if I proceeded with that dream. The case is different these days, things have changed tremendously. Nigerian Musicians are paid top dollar to mount the stage and perform, even to make an appearance at a private party. Nigerian music holds sway in the night clubs, weddings and other events. The film industry I belong to aka Nollywood has also come into its own in its twenty something years of existence, commanding respect and appreciation from people the world over. Our films have reached the length and breadth of the world. We are being compared to our Hollywood counterparts but there is really no need for comparison as we do not command the kind of resources they have and the life style they live. Their every whim and caprice is indulged and they start trends which the ‘common man’ so to speak, or their fans aspire to and adopt. They are taken at their word and so much is expected of them.

Let us come down to earth and think of the human element here. Celebrities or “stars” do not possess super human powers; they cannot not just lift off the earth and soar into the skies if they so desire. In Nigeria for example, we have tradition, culture, family and religion to think of. We are looked at as role models to the youth who watch us and aspire to be who we are and do what we do. A lot of young people these days are abandoning professions such as medicine, law, engineering to become actors, musicians and comedians mostly for the glitz, glamour… and of course, monetary gains but unaware of the unpalatable aspect of it. You are held under the microscope as a specimen and prodded constantly with lies, insinuations and judged. The strength to maintain your dignity and stand tall through it all is hard to imagine but you must find it and through all the mudslinging keep your cool. You love your work; you are great at it and want that to be the focus rather than your personal life. It is almost impossible as the Pull Him Down Syndrome (PHD) is a thirsty spirit that is insatiable. It rejoices at your mistakes, sneers at you and is boastful of its power over you. There is a saying that when you point a finger at someone, four more point back to you. This is true literally and of course what goes around comes around as sure as a fan oscillates, the breeze will get around.

Who knows what tomorrow holds but the Creator… Who can say tomorrow I will be here and I will do this and that except by His divine grace and mercy. Let he that standeth take heed lest he fall. When you are an actor, playing different roles, looking glamorous and feeling that the world is your oyster, getting adoration from your fans and admirers, touch as many lives as you can, be an agent of change, correct wrongs and uphold the right way, put your weight behind great causes. Hopefully the lives you touch or inspire might just be the ones you save. The most important people in your life are your family and maybe a few good friends and they accept you just the way you are, stand by you no questions asked.

Chin up, take the licking and keep on ticking. Today’s news will be in tomorrow’s rubbish bin. “If nobody talk about you, then you are nobody”
–Tuface Idibia.

Nollywood responds to Nigerian Suicide Blast

African Movies apart from serving as a mode of entertainment also contributes to the creation of jobs for the entire crew members of each movie production, the cast, the marketers, the distributors, as well as shops and individuals who are engaged in the movie industry at each level for regular sustenance. The perpetuation and continuity for this however requires security, as desired and important requisite tools that provide a stable environment for each movie to be produced. The security of the cast who are important personalities by way of the success they have achieved can’t be understated. So when there is any upheaval, irregularity, or sudden instability that threatens security, it behooves all stakeholders to be worried.

Nigeria has in years past been a victim of instability until the late 90’s when it reverted to democratic rule and ensured a level of continued peace thereafter. Renewed instability in recent times however is worrying. The emergence of a radicalist group that has been involved in suicidal attacks is very worrying and threatens to derail the peace and stability that existed, which has also caught the attention of some movie stars. Whereas some are natives of Nigeria like Omoni Oboli, and Rita Dominic, the likes of Van Vicker who has essentially accepted Nigeria as his second home and does most of his production there are worried.

Below are comments they made after the most recent attack that targeted the Nigerian Police Headquarters in the capital State of Abuja on June 16th.

Van Vicker: “Just got the pics, there has been a bomb blast in Nigeria…u know what to do.” Is Van probably referring to the fact of staying away from Nigeria for security reasons?. The he added further “Na waaaaaoooo. Abuja bombing.”

Omoni Oboli simply had this to say: “May God help my beloved Nigeria..?”
And Rita Dominic had this sober comment: “Just read about it! Sad!”
We think they have done well in restraining there despair to the issue which obviously is of a greater magnitude. What do you think?
